The Trouble with Grace

As a Christian, as a Lutheran, as one who believes that Martin Luther was right, I profoundly believe that when there is doubt about how to handle any situation that we should “err on the side of Grace.” In its purest form, Grace is unconditional. It is the unconditional love and forgiveness that we receive from God (and most certainly we do not deserve it) and, therefore, we are called to treat our fellow humans as God treats us… with Grace.

And that’s the rub. While from God Grace comes to us in its purest form, we humans are totally unable to pass it on in the same manner. And that’s the Trouble with Grace. Grace is unconditional… hypocrisy is conditional. We are hypocrites.

I am an interim/transition pastor for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Besides my work, my passion is training and sharing the love of a therapy dog. Therapy dogs are also known as visitation dogs. They are trained to visit people in hospitals, schools, care centers, etc. Their goal is to brighten people's day.
