I have never been a fan of “stuff.” Oh, don’t get me wrong… I have plenty of it. What I have come to realize, though, as I have journeyed through life and moved to various places all over the US, is there is a big difference between stuff I “need” and stuff I “want.”
Part of my resistance to “stuff” may be my dislike of housework. I don’t understand why people collect a lot of things that may be pretty, or expensive, or have sentimental value, but actually have no practical function other than to collect dust… and thus make a lot of extra work for whomever owns it!
And, when I started moving to a different location on a yearly basis due to my job, I learned that I can easily live in one room… or at least a studio type apartment. As long as I have a bed, a bath, a fridge and a microwave… electricity and running water… a dog… and I’m good to go. I came to this realization the year that I actually did live in a hotel room for a year! And, it was an expensive year, too, because I paid for 99% of my stuff to languish in storage all the way across the country from where I lived. (I moved my clothes and a few personal items and my dog in my car). It stayed there for two years. Now if you have stuff that you don’t see or use for 2 years, I suggest that you have too much stuff!
